If You Rent This House, Please Invite Me
This gargantuan house (over 12,000 square feet) on the western shore of Lake Tahoe just south of Tahoe City rents out for up to $50,000 per week depending upon the time of year—that's before the 10% vacation rental tax and $750 cleaning fee. The entryway, with 40-foot-high ceilings, matching grand staircases leading to separate wings, and a view past the living room out to the lake, is quite gawk-worthy to say the least. The property—which includes a lovely guest cottage—boasts nine bedrooms and ten baths; theater, fitness, wine, and billiard rooms; and a nanny suite (of course) with its own kitchenette. According to Zillow.com, the property is currently estimated to be worth $6.4 million, although this estimate has ranged as high as $10.7 million in the last year. Even that may be low, considering that the State of California last set the total assessed value (buildings plus land) at $16.3 million. I suspect the property owners will be appealing that assessment in the face of the declining real estate market. But then, that's not a concern of us renters, is it?
